How to Get More Calls From Google: A Plan for Contractors
Your next customer is searching right now. Here’s a no-fluff plan for roofers, HVAC, plumbers, electricians, and cleaners to be the one they call.

Why Google decides who gets the call
When a homeowner needs a trade, they don’t flip through a phone book. They search, glance at the map, skim the reviews, and call. In Whitespark’s May 2025 study, Google’s map pack of three businesses showed up on 93% of local-intent searches. Three spots. And Mantel’s 2025 report found homeowners contacted just 2.1 contractors on average. Miss that shortlist and the phone simply doesn’t ring.
The 5-step plan
1. Finish your Google Business Profile. Pick the right primary category, set your real service area, list every service, add your hours, and upload real photos of your trucks, crew, and work. An empty profile looks like a closed business.
2. Ask every happy customer for a review. Send a direct link or QR code before you leave the job. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 83% of people who were asked went on to leave one, and 47% won’t use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. Reply to every review. Never buy fake ones; the FTC banned them in 2024.
3. Make your website a calling machine. Fast on a phone, number at the top of every page, big tap-to-call button, reviews on the page. Not sure if yours qualifies? Check the 5 signs your site needs a rebuild. They apply to every trade.
4. Build a page for each service and city. “AC repair in Largo” and “water heater install in Clearwater” are different searches. Give each main service and city its own page so Google and homeowners can match you to exactly what they need.
5. Answer the phone. It sounds obvious, but every unanswered call during a job is a customer dialing the next name on the list. Use a call answering service or a fast callback rule, and track which calls come from Google so you know what’s working.
