How Tampa Bay Contractors Can Get More Google Reviews

Reviews help you show up on the map and win the call. Here is a simple way to ask every customer, inside Google’s rules.

Why reviews matter

When a homeowner searches for a plumber, roofer, electrician or AC company, the map results show your star rating and how many reviews you have right next to your name. Google says prominence is one of the things it uses to rank local results, and reviews are part of that. Homeowners also read them to decide who to call first.

Most happy customers never leave a review on their own. They will if you ask at the right moment and make it take less than a minute.

When and how to ask

  • Ask right after the job. The best moment is when the AC is blowing cold or the leak is fixed and the customer is thanking your tech.
  • Have the tech ask in person. A quick, friendly ask from the person who did the work lands better than an email weeks later.
  • Follow up by text the same day. Send your direct review link so they can tap it and leave stars without searching for you.
  • Use your direct link. In your Google Business Profile, find the option to ask for reviews and copy the short link it gives you. Save it in your phone and your scheduling software.
  • Automate the reminder. Most field service apps can send a review text when a job is marked complete, so nobody has to remember.
  • Ask every customer. Make it part of closing out every job, not something you do when business is slow.

A text you can send today

Keep it short and personal. Something like this works for any trade:

Hi Maria, thanks for having us out today. If you have a minute, a quick Google review really helps a local business like ours: [your review link]. Thank you! – Mike, ABC Plumbing

Use the customer’s first name and the tech’s name. If they don’t respond, one polite reminder a few days later is plenty.

Replying to reviews

Reply to every review, good or bad. A short thank-you that mentions the job and the town, like “Thanks for trusting us with your water heater in Largo,” reads naturally and shows you pay attention.

For a bad review, stay calm. Thank them, own what went wrong without arguing, say how you fixed it or will fix it, and give a number to call. Never share private job details in a reply.

Rules you can’t break

  • No paying for reviews. No discounts, gift cards or contest entries in exchange for a review.
  • No review gating. Don’t screen customers first and only send happy ones to Google.
  • No fake reviews. No reviews from yourself, staff, family or anyone who wasn’t a customer.
  • No review stations. Don’t hand customers a company tablet to review you on the spot.

Reviews work best on a complete profile and a site with clear pages for each town. See our Google Business Profile checklist, our guide to service area pages and how to get more calls from Google.

FAQ

Can I offer a discount or gift card for a review?

No. Google's rules don't allow paying for reviews or offering anything in exchange for them. Ask plainly and make it easy instead.

Can I only ask the customers I know are happy?

No. Picking only happy customers to ask is called review gating, and Google's rules forbid it. Ask every customer after every job.

Should I reply to bad reviews?

Yes. Reply calmly, thank them for the feedback, say what you did or will do to make it right, and offer to talk by phone. Future customers read your reply as much as the review.

Can family or employees leave reviews?

No. Reviews should come from real customers about real jobs. Reviews from staff, family or yourself break Google's rules and can be removed.

Can Launchpad help set up a review routine?

Yes. Launchpad helps Tampa Bay contractors set up their Google Business Profile and a simple review request routine. Call (727) 634-9808 for a free quote.
